Andy Carroll to Manchester United in the January transfer window?

21 year old Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll is being watched closely by boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he looks to bolster his striking options.

Undoubtedly, United are looking for another striker to fill the voids set by Michael Owen and cocky Federico Macheda.

Ferguson is likely to face competition for the striker if he decides to make a move in January.

While Dimitar Berbatov leads the Premier League scoring charts, Ferguson is reportedly keen to strengthen, as England star Wayne Rooney continues to misfire after his return from injury, and Michael Owen is expected to leave in January, or the summer.

In terms of other options, Javier Hernandez has impressed but is not yet an automatic first team choice, while Federico Macheda is still untried and has been linked with moves back to Italy.

United manager Ferguson is also expected to be given £50 million to spend over the course of the next year and remains among the favourites to capture the troubled striker.
